To Show Leadership, You Don’t Need a Title

by Shirley Mayton

There are two ways most of us learn that there’s a big distinction between having a title as a leader and showing real leadership behavior.

The first – and unfortunately more common – way is having a negative experience with a bad boss who may have the title of leader, but fails to show leadership, leaving their team unhappy and unfocused. The more exciting way is when we realize that a co-worker or someone lower down on the organizational chart shows great leadership on all the projects they work on, despite not having an official title as a leader.

In my career as a leadership consultant, the most rewarding part has been to witness those “a-ha!” moments when people realize that their behavior is what makes them a leader, not their title. Even better is watching how, as each individual contributor begins to show more leadership, the performance of their entire team accelerates. As more teams begin to unleash leadership potential through the company, it’s amazing to see the transformation across the entire organization.

In this video, I’d like to share an experience with you about igniting informal leadership in a group that personally inspired me. This group was full of potential, but none actually had direct reports working for them. Initially, some members of the group thought the leadership course was a waste of time as they weren’t officially leaders. But one administrative assistant demonstrated the power that comes with unleashing leadership potential in any and every job.
